Who else loves a good grilled cheese as much as I do? It is hard to resist that buttery, crispy crunch with gooey cheese on the inside. To make it slightly healthier, I like to add some vegetables to grilled cheese. My recipe for Grilled Cheese with Havarti, Mushrooms, and Onions is going to BLOW your mind!! It is super easy and quick to make for a weeknight dinner!
What are the ingredients for Grilled Cheese with Havarti, Mushrooms, and Onions?
Well, the title pretty much sums it up! In addition to Havarti cheese, mushrooms, and onions, you will need sliced bread of your choice, plus some butter and/or oil to cook it up.
How do you make Grilled Cheese with Havarti, Mushrooms, and Onions?
I love to use my griddle to sauté the veggies and cook the grilled cheese. That way, you pretty much only have one thing to clean when you are done!
First, preheat the griddle to 350°F. Add olive oil, mushrooms, and onions. Sauté until mushrooms are soft and onions are slightly golden brown.
Toast the slices of bread. Spread a thin layer of butter or smart balance on the outsides of the bread. Add it to the skillet.
Add one slice of Havarti cheese to one slice of bread. Then add on the mushrooms and onions. Top it with the second slice of Havarti cheese. Add the second slice of bread. Cook for about 4 minutes on each side until bread is lightly golden brown.
Cut in half and enjoy!
What does Havarti Cheese taste like?
To me, Havarti cheese tastes like a combination of Swiss cheese and Cheddar cheese. It is on the mild side, and it has a really nice flavor that goes perfectly inside a grilled cheese sandwich.
Sizzling Tip:
Instead of using butter on the outside of your bread, try using a very thin layer of mayo. I know, it sounds weird, but somehow it makes the bread super crispy and buttery without any butter!
